The Fantastical Hayao Miyazaki, Head Guru at Studio Ghibli

Image

Labeled the “god of anime” and one of the world’s most influential Asians, this Oscar-nominated animator is best known for the popular films My Neighbor Totoro,
Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, and Spirited Away. With his refreshingly organic style, a departure from the mechanical, Sci-Fi quality of most Japanese anime, Miyazaki’s work has always stood out. Recurring themes of environmentalism, pacifism, and the struggle between self and duty dominate his films. His protagonists are strong, independent females and the villains, are more nuanced, not purely evil but morally ambiguous. Miyazaki’s movies also reveal his passion for flight; magical characters almost always fly and airplanes make appearances. Reflecting his desire to strike a balance between technology and the natural world, his amines are hand drawn with digital imaging accounting for only 10% of the animation.
